I grew up knowing that I had two Revolutionary War ancestors: one on my Mom’s side and one on my Grandmother’s tree. So, in 2017 I decided to work through my personal list of ancestors who lived during the war to see if they also served.
Thanks to GenealogyBank’s Historical Newspaper Archives I learned about other relatives who served in the American Revolution.
I found there were plenty of them.
- My sixth-great-grandfather Peter Brier (1738-?) fought in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga.
- My cousin Isaac Billington, Sr. (1758-1829) was a Private who served for two years from Rhode Island.
- My fifth-great-grandfather Lieutenant Joseph Appleby (1731-1792) served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Westchester County, New York Militia. George Washington lived in his home during the battle there in 1781.
- My cousin Daniel McKinney (1740-1809) fought under George Washington and participated in the Boston Tea Party.
- My ancestor Captain Isaac Sawyer Stevens (1748-1820) was a Revolutionary War hero and the father of American tinware pioneer Zachariah Stevens.
- My fifth-great grandfather Lieutenant Nathaniel Haskell (1742-1794) served in Colonel Edmund Phinney’s Thirty-first Regiment of Foot.
- My fifth-great-grandfather Noah Marsh (1755-1830) served in the 2nd New Hampshire Regiment, which spent the brutal winter of 1777-1778 in Valley Forge.
- My ancestor Deacon Edward Fox (1755-1839) was a cordwainer and a Revolutionary War veteran of the 2nd New Hampshire Regiment.
It is so interesting to learn about these veterans of the American Revolution. I look forward to discovering more details of my family history in 2018.
