What Are Vital Records and Why Are They So Important?

Before we go further, it is helpful to understand what are vital records and the reason behind their importance. These records are government-issued documents that record the key life events of individuals. These include:

  • Birth Certificates: Establish a person’s full name, date, and place of birth, and often the names of parents.
  • Marriage Licenses: Show who got married, when and where, and often include maiden names and witnesses.
  • Death Certificates: Provide information about the date and cause of death, burial details, and surviving relatives.

You can access all these official documents and put them together to get the full circle view of someone’s life. This can greatly help you trace family connections.

Even when government records are missing or lost, newspaper archives often preserve the same essential information.

How Vital Records Support Your Family Tree

Vital records essentially connect the dots between generations and help solve common genealogy challenges – BMD records go beyond just confirming facts, such as:

  • Matching maiden names with married identities
  • Identifying siblings, step-relatives, or in-laws
  • Confirming immigration dates through birthplaces
  • Locating burial sites or family plots
  • Verifying middle names, nicknames, and initials

You can build a comprehensive and well-sourced family tree with this data in hand. Due to its official nature your future generations can rely on the family tree you made.

Who Benefits from BMD Records Access?

BMD records are great for research at any level:

  • Beginners can start research with foundational facts

  1. Am looking for records concerning my genetic mother, who is deceased. Her name was Ruth Plaut. She lived in Sacramento and also southern California in the beach areas of Redondo, Hermosa, etc. She had 3 daughters: myself, an older daughter named JoAnn and a younger daughter named Christine. I was adopted in 1951. She died somewhere around 1971. After I was adopted she had another child, a boy in the LA county hospital in 1951. I know this is a long time ago, but if anyone reading this recognizes any of the info above – appreciate a reply.
