Genealogy Tip: One of the ways to take advantage of the fact that GenealogyBank is always adding new content is to use a feature on the newspapers’ search results page that lets you search just on the content added since a certain time. With this feature, found along the left-hand side of the search results page, you can search only on the newest content – even newspaper articles GenealogyBank added within the past week!

GenealogyBank adds new content to its Historical Newspaper Archives constantly, so keep searching. And good luck with your family history research!

  1. Thanks for the continual updates of new online newspaper sources. I am a subscriber to both and Each seems to specialize in different papers and I have found a lot of genealogy in both, especially in the Midwest. But neither site has much in the Upstate NY cities along the Mohawk River and virtually no historical information for Amsterdam, NY. While no longer a destination of interest, Amsterdam was once a huge manufacturing and transportation hub in the late 1800s through the mid 1900s. It attracted scores of immigrants and others looking for work. Located on the Mohawk River, manufacturing included a huge carpet mill, grist mills, clothing manufacturing, cigar making, horse and buggy companies, and on and on. It was on the old Mohawk Turnpike, and also had the Erie Canal and railroads to transport goods. At one point Amsterdam became the 7th largest city in New York state and was home to more millionaires than anywhere else in NY. And a lot of the descendants of those folks are now trying to piece together their family trees!

In 1889, I once traveled to Amsterdam, NY, and spent 2 days doing research at the current newspaper office of The Recorder. Its predecessors were The Amsterdam Daily Democrat and the Amsterdam Evening Recorder and they have almost everything from both publications on microfilm. I hope you will consider acquiring these for digital publication on GenealogyBank. While I found and copied incredible articles, obituaries and family lore on that trip, I now live in California and will probably never be able to get back to research new relatives I have discovered since then. Not only would I be happy, but I believe it could open up a lot of new subscribers for you. I constantly hear that there is virtually no online resource for genealogy in this area.

    Thanks for any consideration, Karen
