GenealogyBank today added 115 newspapers from 29 States – with coverage from 1775 to today.

Here’s a great obituary I found for Mrs. Catherine Reilly (1770-1874) – it has plenty of the genealogical facts we’re looking for.
It gives her date and place of birth: 4 May 1770 – in Cootehill, County Cavan, Ireland …. and the date and place of her death: 3 Oct 1874 in Media, PA. States that she came to America in 1840 – through the Port of Philadelphia – where she lived “for many years”.
It tells us that she had “seven children and twenty-four grandchildren” and that her aunt “recently died in Ireland at the age of one hundred and eight”.
That’s terrific - but look closer. This obituary was first published in the Philadelphia Public Ledger and was reprinted in the San Francisco Evening Bulletin (23 Oct 1874). You might just find that the obituary you are looking for also appeared in a newspaper clear across the country.

It’s great to see all the older newspapers being added in such quantities. This database is changing the way I do genealogy. In just a few months I have been able to flesh out the lives of several ancestors in a way that wasn’t possible before. Not only am I finding unexpected items about specific ancestors, I’m also better able to reconstruct the times in which these people lived. Keep up the good work!

It is great to see so many Spanish papers added. I’d like to see many more papers in languages other than English from the major immigration centers. This would also be encouragement for researchers to learn to read the languages of their immigrant ancestors or at least enough to find the family names of interest!

I research all the descendants of a family with an unusual surname, so I find a terrific amount of information in newspapers. Here’s the problem. a few months ago I finally finished going through 3, 245 hits. Now I search with the new content added and I get 3467 hits… another 222 entries. But which ones are they?? Do I have to go through the whole database all over again? Here is what I would love to have: The ability to limit or sort results by the date added. Here’s what I would REALLY love: the ability to be notified by email when data in new content matches one of my specified searches.

Is there any specific reason why grayscale scans in preview mode are being removed and only black and white, much harder to read (sometimes totally indecipherable due to poor quality) images are left?
when do you plan to upload the
